Information for Self/Independent Publishers

Argosy is frequently asked by self/independent publishers what is the process for publishing their book and how Argosy can help. Hopefully these guidelines will help new publishers with the distribution of their books.

The Writers and Artists Yearbook is an invaluable source to new publishers or would-be-writers. It contains the names and addresses of all publishers in the UK and Ireland as well as those of literary agents. It discusses, in detail, the advantages and disadvantages of self publishing. It also gives information on how to obtain an ISBN and why ISBNs are so important for the book trade (see www.isbn.nielsenbookdata.co.uk)

Argosy will only consider ordering books for stock if they are commercially viable. The following is essential before a book is even considered for stock. The publisher must have an ISBN for their books and the ISBN prefix is solely for this publisher. The barcode and ISBN should be placed on the back cover.

Following on from this, please send a sample copy to the address below, marked for the attention of BUYER, Argosy, Unit 12 North Park, North Road, Finglas, Dublin 11. This will not be returned unless a stamped addressed envelope is supplied (obviously this is not possible with UK addresses unless Irish stamps are provided). Please include any publisher information and any marketing and promotional material that is planned for the book with the sample.

Argosy Wholesale is not responsible for marketing and publicity (or sales representation) for new publishers. Argosy has a weekly and monthly newsletter - all customers are informed through this of newly published titles. Our website also contains details of all books we have in stock. If there is a book of specific interest to a particular area in Ireland, Argosy will endeavour to inform the bookshop(s) in that region.

Argosy will take your submission(s) seriously and if a book is considered for stock further contact will be made via email. Email is essential as our terms and conditions for ordering will be sent via this method. However, if Argosy decides not to take a book for stock, you will also be contacted. This could take as long as 10 working days - please be patient as we have a lot of submissions on an ongoing basis. Please send all queries to enquiries@argosybooks.ie
